Description
Summary:Estienne Pasquier is frequently cited as an exemplar of sixteenth-century historicism. An analysis of his Recherches de la France reveals, however, that he did not conceive of historical entities as developing through time, but rather as unfolding in fulfillment of their predetermined essences. This Aristotelian conception of historical change is, furthermore, reflected in the taxonomic structure of the Recherches. The traditional, Aristotelian mode of thinking thus provided a means of understanding the wealth of historical entities revealed by developments in sixteenth-century legal and historical scholarship.
