Description
Summary:Lord Treasurer Winchester was celebrated in his own time, not only for his distinguished career in office, but also for his longevity. His contemporaries, his descendants, and subsequent historians have all agreed that he lived a very long time, but estimates of his actual age have varied by as much as twenty years. The evidence is almost entirely circumstantial, and requires careful evaluation. Because old age was itself venerated in the sixteenth century, Winchester's reputation is to some extent bound up with the solution of this problem, which also provides interesting insights into Renaissance chronology.
