Queen Elizabeth had already lent money to John Casimir of the Palatinate, who was leading a mercenary army in the pay of the States General. With the recovery of initiative by the Spanish forces under Philip II's natural brother, Don Juan of Austria, the queen was averse to further involvement. She sought the advice of her privy councillors. Thomas Radcliffe, earl of Sussex, the lord chamberlain, was one of them. This recently discovered letter is his reply. |
