| Summary: | Summarizing the research done by East German historians since 1955 concerning the role played by the silver miners of the Erzgebirge in the Peasants' War of 1525, this article argues that the workers' relative inactivity is attributable to three factors: the different levels of production in the various mining districts; divisions within the mining communites; and hostility between miners and peasants. The conclusion is reached that technological changes occurring since 1470 were of much greater importance in determining the subsequent conditions within the mining industry than the outcome of the Peasants' War. |
