Summary: | The structural function of the household and the development of the family during the transition from peasant society to industrial capitalism have earned scholarly attention in the recent past. Demographic and social historians, applying quantitative techniques, have shown interest in available information about German family life. A unique source about private German family life in Cologne in the sixteenth century is provided by the Weinsberg family records kept by Herman Weinsberg (1518-1597) in his private Gedenkbuch. Although some of the interesting parts of this work were published at the beginning of this century, social and economic historians have yet to fully explore this impressive document. |
