Summary: | This article sheds new light on Rabbi Yona ibn Janāḥ--the greatest Hebrew grammarian of the medieval period. While it is known that he was profoundly influenced by Arab grammarians, no extensive attempt has been made until now to examine the treatises of the Arab grammarians who preceded Ibn Janāḥ to determine the latter's sources for his works on Hebrew grammar, especially his comprehensive grammar of Biblical Hebrew, Kitāb al-Lumaʿ. Such an attempt is made in this study, and yields surprising findings: not only does Ibn Janāḥ borrow many topics from the Arab grammarians, in many instances he copies whole sentences and passages verbatim. This article presents only representative examples of the twenty linguistic rules and definitions in the areas of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, which have obviously been taken from the Arab grammarians, either in general content or in verbatim copying. The findings show that the Arab grammarian who had the greatest influence on Ibn Janāḥ was al-Mubarrad, although in the specific field of linguistic rules and definitions, Ibn Janāḥ was also influenced by Sībawayhi and al-Zajjājī. |
