Summary: | A close reading of the dīwān of Moses Dar'ī, the most gifted poet of medieval Karaism, gives good reason to believe that he lived in the first half of the thirteenth century. It is likely that Dar'ī was familiar with the writings of the Hispanic-Hebrew Rabbanites, Judah Halevi and Moses ibn Ezra and was influenced by their work. It can be conjectured that Dar'ī was "converted" to Karaism in his youth, although his mature writings give no reason to doubt the sincerity of his Karaite commitment. Dar'ī is the product of both Arab courtly culture and Jewish civilization, and his writings reflect both the tension and the blend between them. |
