Description
Summary:Modern scholarship asserts that the Claudian expulsion of Roman Jews referred to in Suetonius Claudius 25.4 occurred in 41 or 49 CE, while nineteenth-century scholars augued for a 52 CE date. In examining all evidence available for a solution to this problem, the present study comes to the conclusion that Claudius may in fact have expelled Jews from Rome more than once. However, though a difficult year for Jews under the new emperor, 41 CE is not probable as the date of any expulsion, and 49 CE, supported mainly by the unreliable witness of Acts 18 and Orosius, is no more likely than any other year between 42 and 54 CE for such an act or acts on the part of Claudius.
