| Summary: | One of Saadiah Gaon's lexicographical works, his "Kitāb al-sab'īn lafẓah al-mufrada (= SL)," is not known to us in its entirety. Some three-quarters of its ninety-six items (which orginally did not exceed seventy), including the introduction, were published from genizah fragments by B. Klar in 1943 and by N. Allony in 1958. The rest of this work could be reconstructed according to an abridgment. This abridgment, which was published many times before Klar's edition, merely gives the titles of the words discussed and their bare mishnaic parallels, but nothing of the discussion and documentation of the original. A new genizah fragment in the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, ENA 2713/49, contains five items of biblicalmishnaic comparison, three of which (צבעים ,גולמי ,כברה) are identical with three consecutive items in the abridgment. The fragment is undoubtedly a section of a missing part of SL. Close examination of the method and terminology, and even specific expressions, substantiate the claim that the fragment belongs to SL and is of Saadiah's authorship. Translations of two of the items could be corroborated by Saadiah's renderings in his "Tafsir" (משולבות ,גולמי), two are from books with no "Tafsir" (צבועים ,כברה), and one (שבלול) has a unique and interesting explanation not found elsewhere, connecting it to שליה ('placenta') and שליל ('embryo'). |
