Summary: | It is argued in this paper (a) that the Babatha archive provides important evidence for an administrative reorganization of the Province of Arabia in the late twenties and early thirties of the second century CE, involving the creation of a Provincia Arabia Nova; and (b) that the marriage contract in P. Yadin 18, which is part of the evidence for (a), is not a "Jewish" document (though of course relating to Jews) but a secular document testifying to the integration of law and custom of Jews in the Province with the customary law of their non-Jewish neighbors. The paper is divided into two parts, dealing respectively with (a) and (b). They are published together because they are based largely on the same documentary material. |
