| Summary: | This article documents the rise of the Evangelical movement in Mexican politics. Unlike historical Protestantism (Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists, etc.), which contained many elements that could be considered progressive, the Pentecostal-Evangelical denominations are characterized by a strongly conservative agenda. This paper argues that the rise of Evangelicalism in Mexican politics in recent years implies an attempt to shift the way secularism has historically been treated in the nation, characterized by the strict separation between the church and the state. |
