Summary: | For Jewish Israelis, religion, regardless of their own religiosity, is hardly a private matter. Politically, the power of religious parties and institutions seems unshaken despite secularization, a large number of Israelis maintain their attachment to Jewish religion in beliefs and practices, and a consensus among the Jewish majority that Israel is and must remain a "Jewish state" guarantees the all-but-permanent importance of religion in public life. Consensus and compromises, however, seem to fall apart in the face of new challenges that defy them. Israel’s "Jewish identity crisis," according to Yaacov Yadgar, "is key to understanding not only the intricacies of intra-Jewish sociopolitics, but also Israel’s positions and actions in international affairs" (p. xiv). |
