Summary: | It is generally assumed that ancient Christianity never tried to emancipate itself from the traditional Hellenistic school curriculum, not even after the Constantinian shift. A shared grammatical and rhetorical education based on Homer and other classics provided both pagans and Christians with a common way for climbing the social ladder. In spite of this generally reliable interpretation, my contribution aims at demonstrating that a Christian school did exist in Antioch between 4th and 5th cent. We can infer this from Adrian’s Introduction to the Divine Scripture, a treatise which fits well within the features of secondary-level introductions to the style of specific authors. Adrian’s attempt finds a theoretical support in John Chrysostom’s educational theories and can be contextualized in the wider Antiochene ambition to create a new fully Christianized society. |
