Summary:Following the revelation of the extent of the problem of clerical sexual abuse in North America and in many other countries, Pope John Paul II issued the "motu proprio, Sacramentorum Sanctitatis Tutela", on 30 April 2001. The pope appointed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to supervise investigations into credible complaints of sexual abuse of children and how they were handled so that there was a system with more transparency and accountability.
