Description
Summary:What does it mean simply to talk about God? The present essay encourages taking up the theological task of "simply talking about God" (F. Mildenberger) in an unashamed way (cf. Romans 1:16). This is in contrast to a shamefaced apologetics which demands a translation of faith into the secular language of modern man. At the same time, an affirmative plea is made for an attitude of cheerful serenity, indeed an "impudent" matter of course. Such speech about God is not simple in that it appears simplistic, banal, or artless, but rather, according to its intention, it is undisguised. Simple speech about God means the "language of faith" (G. Ebeling) or "first order language" (G. Lindbeck) compared to doctrinal theology as "second order language". The simple speech about God corresponds to a "preaching from within" (M. Nicol). Scripture is here understood as a resource for the preacher, since it speaks the language of faith and the language of the world at the same time. As a book full of experience, it is a language aid of faith, which leads to simple speech about God.
