Description
Summary:The Europeanization process has created new opportunities for Romanian Christian higher education institutions, but these are coupled with new waves of secularization. The secularization and the transformation of institutional identity are the result of inner institutional decisions only apparently, since these decisions were undertaken in order to meet the external, top-down pressures and the educational standards of Romanian central governance. The comprehensive reform of Romanian higher education implemented under the umbrella of the Bologna Process has started a new wave of homogenization and standardization of the higher education sector. The development of the reform policies followed the logic of the top-down initiatives and was uniformly applied to public higher education, without any reference to religious mission-oriented institutions, especially to those who provide education for laity, but the implementation was made compulsory with governmental orders. In our study we provide a short review of the development and actual structure of Christian higher education, which will be followed with the presentation of an institutional case study, through which we will illustrate the effects of the national and European higher education reforms on church-related institutions.
