Summary: | This paper presents results of factors that contribute to deconversion from Christianity. Six hundred and eighty-nine participants (92.9% received a college education) who identified with some form of the Christian religion completed a survey comprising both forced-choice and open-ended questions. Using a concurrent triangulation mixed-method design, in which quantitative and qualitative methods are concurrently engaged, the quantitative component of this study led to a discovery of two key factors: believing that the church is out of touch with their lives and doubting that same-sex marriage is morally wrong. The common themes revealed by the open-ended data include "judgmental," "can no longer relate," "people of the church do not understand ideas," etc. |
