| Summary: | Encore méconnus de l’historiographie française pour leur action diplomatique, Jacques Bongars, Jean Hotman et Étienne de Sainte-Catherine, agents français envoyés auprès des princes protestants de l’Empire entre 1589 et 1620, sont pourtant au cœur d’une intense activité épistolaire dont le contenu comme la chronologie paraissent transcender les relations diplomatiques traditionnelles. La conservation extraordinaire de leurs papiers révèle certes une implication réelle dans l’exercice de leur charge diplomatique, mais surtout une abondante correspondance personnelle, sortant du cadre imposée par cette dernière. Une première reconstitution de leur réseau, fondée sur leurs seules correspondances passives, donne déjà à voir un réseau aux multiples recoupements, embrassant la société protestante rhénane et plus largement la République des Lettres. L’ampleur des échanges, dépassant la seule érudition politique ou historique, leur permanence ainsi que les charges politiques de certains correspondants obligent à s’interroger sur une éventuelle porosité entre exercice diplomatique, préoccupations confessionnelles et réseaux politico-érudits et de fait sur l’influence de Bongars, Hotman et Sainte-Catherine, dans les processus de prise de décision politique et diplomatique tant en France que dans l’Empire. The diplomatic activity of Jacques Bongars, Jean Hotman, and Étienne de Sainte-Catherine — all French agents to the imperial Protestant princes between 1589 and 1620 — may be overlooked in French historiography, but in fact these three men were at the very centre of an intense epistolary activity whose content and chronology appear to transcend traditional diplomatic relationships. Their papers, which have been preserved exceptionally well, testify to the depth of their involvement in fulfilling their diplomatic duties, but above all to a prolific personal correspondence surpassing the requirements of their diplomatic charges. The study of their passive correspondence reveals a wide and interconnected network, embracing both Rhenish Protestant society and, on a wider scale, the Republic of Letters. The extent of their exchanges, transcending political and historical erudition, as well as their permanence, and the political charges of several of their correspondents, are suggestive of a porosity between diplomatic practice, confessional preoccupation, and politico-erudite networks, and thus of the influence exercised by Bongars, Hotman, and Sainte-Catherine on political and diplomatic decision-making both in France and in the Empire. Jacques Bongars, Jean Hotman und Étienne de Sainte-Catherine der französischen Geschichtsschreibung für ihre diplomatischen Dienste noch unbekannt. Sie wurden zwischen 1589 und 1620 von Frankreich zu den evangelischen Fürsten im Reich entsandt und stehen im Zentrum eines intensiven Briefwechsels, dessen Inhalt als auch Chronologie weit über traditionelle diplomatische Beziehungen hinausreicht. Die außergewöhnlich gute Erhaltung ihrer Schriften legt ein wirkliches Engagement für die diplomatische Aufgabe offen, aber auch eine ganz besonders reichhaltige persönliche Korrespondenz, die weit über den durch die Aufgabe gesetzten Rahmen hinausreicht. Eine erste Rekonstruktion ihres Netzwerks, die auf der Grundlage der empfangenen Briefe vorgenommen wurde, zeigt eine Vernetzung mit vielfachen Überschneidungen, hinein in die evangelische Gesellschaft im Rheinland und darüber hinaus in die Gelehrtenrepublik. Die Qualität des Austauschs, der weit über eine rein politische oder historische Bildung hinausreichte, seine Dauerhaftigkeit und die politischen Ämter einiger der Briefpartner führen zur Frage, ob eine eventuelle Durchlässigkeit zwischen diplomatischem Dienst, konfessioneller Besorgnis und politischen Bildungsnetzwerken zu einem faktischen Einfluss von Bongars, Hotman und Sainte-Catherine auf die politischen und diplomatischen Entscheidungen in Frankreich und im Reich geführt haben. |
