Summary: | Based on the study of several official texts as well as on the documentation collected by the Service of Relations with Islam (SRI, now National Service of Relations with Muslims) of the French Bishop Conference, Rémi Caucanas highlights the leading role played by popes Paul VI and John Paul II in the adoption by the Catholic Church of a new attitude open to dialogue with the Muslims. Following a chronological sequence, three parts structure this article: the conciliar turn marked notably by the positioning of Paul VI, the post-conciliar euphoria and the emergence of the Assisi paradigm under the pontificate of John Paul II.
