| Summary: | Based on the study of several official texts as well as on the documentation collected by the Service of Relations with Islam (SRI, now National Service of Relations with Muslims) of the French Bishop Conference, Rémi Caucanas highlights the leading role played by popes Paul VI and John Paul II in the adoption by the Catholic Church of a new attitude open to dialogue with the Muslims. Following a chronological sequence, three parts structure this article: the conciliar turn marked notably by the positioning of Paul VI, the post-conciliar euphoria and the emergence of the Assisi paradigm under the pontificate of John Paul II. , S’appuyant sur l’étude de plusieurs textes officiels ainsi que sur la documentation collectée par le Service des Relations avec l’Islam (SRI, aujourd’hui Service National des Relations avec les Musulmans) de la Conférence des Evêques de France, Rémi Caucanas met en lumière le rôle moteur joué par les papes Paul VI et Jean-Paul II quant à l’adoption par l’Eglise catholique d’une attitude nouvelle, ouverte au dialogue avec les musulmans. Suivant un déroulement chronologique, trois parties structurent cet article : le tournant conciliaire marqué notamment par le positionnement de Paul VI, l’euphorie post-conciliaire et l’émergence du paradigmed’Assise sous le pontificat de Jean-Paul II.
