Summary:God is not the object of theology but rather its subject, living and speaking in Himself and for us: He reveals Himself in his unique Word and in the multiform words of salvation history, written down and recapitulated in Jesus Christ, the key to sacred Scripture. Discourse by God, about God, and directed to God, that is to say, theology— here Faith seeks lovingly, by attentive listening and studious contemplation, an understanding of the divine visage—is a dialogue with God, whose truth brings about alētheia, emeth, theōria, poiēsis and proskynēsis. Scripture, as word of God, read in the Spirit who has inspired it, can become theology's soul, for it informs it and rejuven ates it at its unique living source. And so theology can give voice to the Word, and dogma, understood as exegesis, can exercise its function as liberating: augmenting whatever philosophical resources are available. When the exegete remembers that he is a theologian—and the theologian, an exegete—the «theology of the desktop» is recognized as «theology on its knees»: that is, theology in dialogue and in mission.
Dio non è oggetto della teologia, bensì soggetto, vivente e parlante, in sé e per noi, che si auto-rivela nel suo unico Verbo e nelle multiformi parole della storia della salvezza, messe per iscritto e ricapitolate in Gesù Cristo, chiave della Scrittura. Discorso di Dio, su Dio e a Dio, la teologia, dove la fede cerca amorosamente, nell’ascolto rigoroso e la contemplazione studiosa, l’intelligenza del volto divino, è un colloquio con Dio, la cui verità si fa alētheia, emeth, theōria, poiēsis e proskynēsis. Come parola di Dio, la Scrittura, letta nello Spirito che l’ha ispirata, può essere «anima della teologia », perché la informa e la ringiovanisce all’unica sorgente viva. Così la teologia può dare voce al Verbo e il dogma «come esegesi» esercitare la sua funzione «liberatrice», La sacra Scrittura, anima della teologia 269 dilatando il disponibile filosofico. Quando l’esegeta si ricorda di essere teologo e il teologo esegeta, essa, da «teologia da scrivania», si scopre «teologia in ginocchio», cioè in dialogo e in missione.
