The MPQD Ostracon from Tel ʿIra: A New Reading
This paper proposes that the inscription should be read: mpqd brkyhw gbh; mpqd šlmyhw, referring to only two men, both bearing quite popular given names at the end of the Judaean Monarchy. For that reason, the first person was identified by a nickname or clan name, Gibbeah.

Summary: | This paper proposes that the inscription should be read: mpqd brkyhw gbh; mpqd šlmyhw, referring to only two men, both bearing quite popular given names at the end of the Judaean Monarchy. For that reason, the first person was identified by a nickname or clan name, Gibbeah. The MPQD ostracon was excavated at Tel ʿIra and dates from the eighth or seventh century B.C.E. Most scholars interpret its opening word mpqd as "census," followed by a list of four names: Berekhyahu, Gibbeah, Moqir, and Šelemyahu. Y. Garfinkel has suggested the alternate meaning of mpqd as "a command." |
