The use of orpiment in encaustic painting of ships' hulls is found in the writings of Pliny. The former practice was primarily used to repair the hull, while the latter was a technique that served as an anti-fouling measure. Both of these procedures are attested in a papyrus from the Nilotic island of Elephantine (Yeb), which deals with repairs of a baris-ship. The document is dated to the year 411 B.C.E., thus providing the earliest evidence for the use of these two techniques in ancient ship construction.
