Description
Summary:The recorded history of the island of Iotabê in the Red Sea spans a brief 60 years, during which time it changed hands at least four times. The island served, not to control shipping, but to tax merchandise coming from the region(s) known at that time as India, and then to transship it to Roman ports. Iotabê has persistently been identified with the island of Tiran even though archaeological investigation has ruled out that possibility. Identification of Iotabê with any island, ancient or modern, remains in doubt.
