| Summary: | The Mission Archéologique Française de Ras Shamra-Ougarit began a largescale, multidisciplinary study of Ugarit in 1978 to gain an overall view of the city and of how its inhabitants organized its urban space. The Mission has established a precise topographic grid plan of the site and worked toward determining the extent of the site's urban space. Through a careful study of architecture, the Mission has investigated the city's spatial organization into functional types-public and residential areas-and the hierarchical organization of private dwellings into rooms, houses, insulae, and quarters, as well as technical aspects of building construction. Such analyses are essential prerequisites for estimating reliably the city's population. |
