Description
Summary:The biblical data regarding Maḥanaim suggest several criteria for assessing the location of the ancient city. This article reviews previous proposals by geographers, biblical historians, and archaeologists in light of more recent findings regarding the iron industry of antiquity. The hypothesis is set forth that Maḥanaim, located at Tell edh-Dhahab el-Gharbī, was the administrative center for the iron industry in Gilead from about 1006 to 922 B. C., that is, from the death of Saul to the rebuilding of Penuel by Jeroboam I.
