Light from the Galilee: Reading John 8:12 with Isaiah 9 = Licht aus Galiläa : Johannes 8,12 mit Jesaja 9 lesen
Commentators have long noted that the scene about the woman taken in adultery in John 7:53-8:11 is not original to the gospel of John. However, because of the interruption to the narrative, readers rarely see John 7:52 and 8:12 together, generally assuming that 8:12 is the beginning of a new scene....

520 | |a Commentators have long noted that the scene about the woman taken in adultery in John 7:53-8:11 is not original to the gospel of John. However, because of the interruption to the narrative, readers rarely see John 7:52 and 8:12 together, generally assuming that 8:12 is the beginning of a new scene. However, if one reads 8:12 as a direct continuation of 7:52 an interesting possibility emerges. In 7:52, some Pharisees tell Nicodemus to read the scriptures and see that no prophet is prophesied to come from the Galilee. Yet in John 8:12 Jesus states that he is the light of the world. This can be read in light of the Greek translation of Isa 9:1-2 (Isa 8:23-9:1 MT), which states that a “light” will someday shine on people, and this statement is connected to the Galilee. Thus, when 8:12 is read immediately after 7:52, it can be seen as giving the scriptural precedent that a prophet will come from the Galilee. This paper explores this possibility by (1) addressing the continuity between 7:52 and 8:12, (2) addressing how Isa 9 can act as a subtext behind portions of John 7-9, (3) considering this passage in light of the origins of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel and (4) examining this reading of John 7-8 and Isa 9 in light of Matthew’s interpretation ofthe same verse in Matt 4:12-17.
