Paul’s use of the lexeme λογικός, the function of the phrase in the context of Rom 12:1-2 and its contribution to Paul’s wider argument call for an explanation which does not have to resort to implausible reconstructions of polemical scenarios. By closely investigating a key parallel (Epictetus, Diatr. 1.16), routinely adduced by interpreters in a cursory manner, and relating it to a wider ancient philosophical discourse on what it means to be human, a specific sense for the meaning of λογικός emerges which, when coupled with a fresh grammatical/semantic nuance for the way in which the adjective λογικός modifies the noun λατρεία, promises to be a key component of a reading of Rom 12:1-2 which is able to integrate the contribution of Rom 12:1c with the wider argument of the letter. Die Bedeutung des Ausdrucks τὴν λογικὴν λατρείαν ὑμῶν (Röm 12,1c) bleibt für die Paulusforschung umstritten. Sowohl die Wahl des Lexems λογικός und die Funktion des Ausdrucks im Kontext von Röm 12,1-2 als auch dessen Beitrag zur Argumentation des Römerbriefes insgesamt fordern eine Erklärung, die nicht auf unplausible Rekonstruktionen polemischer Szenarien zurückgreifen muss. Indem hier eine wichtige, häufig kursorisch angeführte Parallele (Epiktet, Dissertationes 1.16) genauer analysiert und in den Kontext des antiken philosophischen Diskurses zum Menschsein gestellt wird, ergibt sich ein spezifischer Vorschlag für die Semantik von λογικός, der zusammen mit einer neuen grammatischen Überlegung zum Verhältnis des Adjektivs λογικός zum dadurch bestimmten Nomen λατρεία wichtige Ansätze bietet für ein Verständnis von Röm 12,1-2, das den Beitrag von Röm 12,1c zur Argumentation des Gesamtbriefes schlüssig darstellen kann. |
