Teresa se confronta con una doble perspectiva sobre el «matrimonio espiritual»: la «unión regalada» que da gustos y favores en sentido del gnosticismo, y del otro lado, la «verdadera unión», que sin buscar favores ni deleites místicos, sólo está atenta a realizar la voluntad de Dios, imitando al Esposo en su humanidad, con el servicio al prójimo. Para Teresa, la experiencia mística no es específicamente diferente de la vida ordinaria de la gracia, sino una forma más intesa y comprometida de vivirla.
