Sermone ad alta densità cristologica, originariamente proclamato in un contesto liturgico, o addirittura eucaristico, la Lettera agli Ebrei fu fatta forse circolare come «enciclica» in altre comunità cristiane della stessa area geografica. Constatando che l'autore dello scritto dipende dalla mentalità biblica più che da quella greco-ellenistica, il biblista gesuita ne ha studiato a fondo il testo, facendo uso accurato dei criteri della retorica biblica, dando vita così ad un vero e proprio capolavoro di esegesi. The recent publication in English, French, Spanish and Italian of the commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews by Albert Vanhoye is a unique publishing event that has its place in the perspective of the renewed desire to understand the word of God in the wake of the Council. This volume, a sound product of Vatican II, contains the distillation of decades of exegetical study undertaken by one of the great biblical scholars of our time. Originating as a sermon of dense Christological content, proclaimed in a liturgical or perhaps even a Eucharistic context, the Epistle to the Hebrews was probably circulated as an «encyclical» in other Christian communities within the same geographical area. Albert Vanhoye, noting that the author of Hebrews owes more to a biblical mentality than to that of the Hellenistic-Greek world, has undertaken a thorough study of the text, making careful references to the criteria of biblical rhetoric.
