Summary: | This article analyzes the nature of the qur'ānic criticism of the People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb), namely Jews and Christians. Concentrating on the interpretations of certain qur'ānic verses, as presented by leading Muslim commentators in this relation, the article elaborates the subtle characteristics of the qur'ānic statements and argues that the disapproval directed against the People of the Book should not be regarded as an essentialist criticism, condemning all their beliefs and practices, but a contextual one concerning specific beliefs and practices. Highlighting this contextual nature, the article discusses the differential qur'ānic attitudes towards the different types of the People of the Book. |
