After an overview of their similar biographies, the article stresses their academic differences. Liberatore desires to refute four modern types of philosophy, especially that of Rosmini, and develops a strictly Thomistic theory of knowledge. He considers first of all the content of knowledge, the 'ideas', and explains their abstraction in a quite Lockian manner. Kleutgen, by contrast, seeks to demonstrate to his contemporaries, that scholastic philosophers (a good many of whom he quotes) had already developed a theory of knowledge that both resembled and, in fact, compared favorably to modern theories. Considering first of all the act of knowledge he shows how the 'species' is abstracted from the given by virtue of the reflective power of the human mind (De veritate, q. 1, a. 9). The difference between these two «neoscholastic philosophies» is probably due to the different cultural context in which their authors grew up. L'articolo compara due pionieri del rinnovamento scolastico, l'italiano Matteo Liberatore e il tedesco Joseph Kleutgen, quasi coetanei, vivendo quasi sempre a Roma e interessandosi principalmente per la filosofia della conoscenza. Dopo un abbozzo delle loro vite parallele, si mette in risalto la differenza tra le loro epistemologie. Liberatore polemizzando contro quattro epistemologie moderne, specialmente quella del Rosmini, propone un tomismo di stretta osservanza, considerando principalmente il contenuto del conoscere, l''idea', con una concezione dell'astrazione di sapore ancora lockiano. Kleutgen invece intende mostrare che nei filosofi scolastici, dei quali cita un grande numero, si può trovare una teoria della conoscenza che nulla ha da invidiare a quelle moderne. Considera l'atto di conoscere che per la sua riflessività (De veritate, q. 1, a. 9) fa risaltare la 'specie' universale. Nascono così due 'neoscolastiche' sensibilmente diverse che si spiegano dal diverso contesto culturale onde provengono i due autori.
