| Summary: | This article maintains that the theme of «unity in diversity» is at the heart of Vatican II's Unitatis redintegratio. The first part of Chapter Three of that decree, treating the legitimate variety between the Churches of the East and of the West, illustrates how diversity can be compatible with and even enrich unity. The second part of that chapter suggests that the key to overcoming unacceptable diversity is ecumenical dialogue. Two major fruits of such dialogue are the Faith and Order Commission's text Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (1982) and the Lutheran-Catholic Joint Declaration on Justification (1999). Both of these texts lead to the conclusion that an ecclesial process of discernment is the fundamental means by which unity in diversity is maintained in the Church. For its part, agreement about ecclesial discernment ultimately rests upon agreement about the ministry of episcope or oversight. Questo articolo mantiene che il tema dell''unità nella diversità' sta al cuore del decreto Unitatis redintegratio del Vaticano II. La prima parte del capitolo III del decreto, che tratta la varietà legittima tra le chiese orientali e occidentali, illustra come la diversità può essere non solo compatibile ma perfino un arricchimento dell'unità. La seconda parte dello stesso capitolo suggerisce che la chiave per superare la diversità che distrugge l'unità è il dialogo ecumenico. Due risultati principali di un tale dialogo sono il testo Battesimo, Eucaristia e Ministero della commissione 'Fede e Costituzione' (1982) e quello della commissione bilaterale Luterano-Cattolica — la Dichiarazione Comune sulla Giustificazione (1999). Entrambi portano la conclusione che il mezzo insostituibile per mantenere l'unità nella diversità legittima della Chiesa è un processo di discernimento ecclesiale. Per conto suo, la chiave per un accordo sul discernimento ecclesiale è un accordo sul ministero d'episkope o di sorveglianza. |
