Summary: | The newness of the revelation of the Father has not always been adequately grasped and stressed. In Jesus' way of speaking of the Father some have seen primarily the repetition of what the revelation to the Jews affirmed regarding God's fatherhood. It is, however, important to discern the newness involved in the revelation of a divine person whose distinctive character consists entirely in being Father. This revelation is bound to that of the plurality of the divine persons, as this is offered to us in the words and the life of Jesus. While interpreting our filial adoption, it cannot be reduced to a mere appropriation. It is in his distinctive characteristic as Father that the Father has willed to have us as his children in his only Son. The prayer to the Father which comes to us from the example and the teaching of Jesus has not yet found the appropriate forms of expression. Thus, in liturgical prayers the Father is not adequately invoked under his name as Father. A development of the consciousness of Christians is desirable in this regard. It could lead to the introduction of a liturgical Feast of the Father, so far absent in the liturgical cycle. |
