Description
Summary:The author addresses some questions to theologians concerning confirmation. The Spirit acts in all the sacraments, but is he "given" in all? If he is, is there a specific gift of the Spirit in confirmation and Order in view of the mission conferred by those two sacraments? Does the specific gift of the Spirit in confirmation consist merely in announcing and witnessing? Is it not also oriented to the sacramental realization of what is announced, which would imply the gift of the priesthood of the faithful? The ordo baptismi of Vatican II has changed the old prayer which accompanied the post-baptismal anointing in order to make it express that the recipient is receiving the priesthood. If, however, confirmation is to be conferred immediately thereafter, this unction and the accompanying prayer must be dropped. Is then the priesthood of the faithful to be assigned to confirmation or to both sacraments? The author addresses questions to pastors also. Can pastoral need overlook theology and tradition? The practice of delaying confirmation and giving the eucharist before, is it justified for the sake of keeping in touch with the young initiates? Can the sacrament in which the Christian initiation culminates be conferred before that which orientates to the divine cult? The author suggests a mystagogy which would make it possible to confer the sacraments of initiation to very young children while a prolonged catechesis would accompany them towards a maturity spurred in them by the gift of the Spirit which has been conferred upon them at the beginning of the maturing process.
