Summary:Origen already paid much attention to 1 Cor 15:24-28. The pericope obtained new prominence after Nicaea in view of the "modalist" interpretation given it by Marcel of Ancyra. In reality, Marcel's interpretation was more archaic than revolutionary, as some pages of Tertullian and Novatian testify. Was recourse to a new schema analogous to that of a "tonic movement" possible where the Trinity was concerned? Could the text of St Paul be interpreted in such a way? Was it not preferable to present it as St Hilary did?
