Summary: | Bultmann is known above all for his exegetical works. He is nevertheless also a systematic theologian of great interest, inasmuch as he proposes a reflection on the fundamental points of Christian faith, based on the message of the New Testament and destined to challenge modern man. A central element of the theology of Bultmann is his reflection on sin. The present article intends to expose this doctrine and to show the fundamental elements of which it is composed. There stand out, in particular: fundamental sin, which consists in the option made by man to understand himself with his own self as point of reference, thereby refusing the true comprehension that starts from God; and the concept of sin as power, which shows that, originating in man's action, sin ends up by being a power that dominates over him. Also fundamental is the concept of man in sinful situation, subject to the contradiction between what he truly aspires to and what, due to sin, he attains in fact. The article ends by pointing to two problematic aspects of the Bultmannian concept of sin: the extreme radicality of sin, and the relationship between sin and pardon in the life of the believer. |
