Summary: | This article both constitutes the second part and concludes a study dedicated to the preparation and to the meaning of Apostolicae Curae, the bull of Leo XIII concerning Anglican Orders (Cfr. Gregorianum 64 [1983], pp. 631-667). The preceding part of the research had analyzed the votes and the memorials of the members of the theological commission established by Leo XIII for the purpose of examining the question. Attention is now given to the actual sessions of the commission, to their progress and to their results. The article then concentrates on the immediate preparation and on the precise meaning of the bull by investigating the preparatory schemes which have been found. Though the latter do not exhaust the documentation, they are nevertheless complete enough to allow one to follow the redaction of the text and to ascertain its meaning. Some important passages of the bull are then studied which are particularly capable of highlighting its authentic meaning. The conclusion, besides summarizing the results of the preceding analyses, projects into the argumentation offered by the theologians on the commission some aspects of post-conciliar sacramental theology. Moreover, questions concerning ecclesiology and sacramental theology are raised on which accord is necessary so as to arrive at a theologically rigorous and objective evaluation of the decision of Pope Leo XIII. |
