Summary: | The vision of the Father, with our subsequent incorrupt state, summarizes much of Irenaeus' teaching, but has not been much studied. Of interest here is the final stage, the transition from the vision of the Son to that of the Father. The reward granted by Christ the judge is doubly gratuitous — in its object and its light. God seeks to manifest himself directly and personally to man. Nevertheless, is it possible to have an immediate intuition of God "secundum carnem"? The fact is established by Gen 1:26. By its spiritual likeness to God, the plasma (=sarx) will see him. The «seeing» prophesied by Is. 6:5 has in mind a vision through likeness ("secundum Spiritum"). Add too the ecstasy of the Apostle Paul. Irenaeus' exegesis of 2 Cor 12:3 establishes the possibility of the mystery. Whether or not Paul saw God «in corpore», the reference to rapture hints at a belief in the possibility of such a vision. It is enough, as a precedent, to indicate against the sectarians a certain seeing of God "secundum carnem". As regards the manner of that vision, Irenaeus can invoke an analogy from the human composite and prophetic "motions". The reign of the Spirit over the human sarx is superior that of the psyche over the body. The prophets were aware of two kinds of spiritual vision: the usual vision touched the psyche and from there affected the body; the other kind "per se" affected the body, as in Is 6:5, "Regem Dominum Sabaoth vidi oculis meis." When granted to men, the Spirit of the Father will «immortalize» the body over which it is poured. Far from being atrophied or even corrupted, as the life of the soul is through communion with the sarx, the Spirit lifts the body to its own level and actively fits it out. The "Salus carnis" consists then in the Life "secundum Spiritum Patris", which follows on the vision of God. Instead of being corrupted, the sarx through the divine vision receives from God an incorrupt state which maintains it in the Being and Life of the Father. Thus a paradox takes place. What will spontaneously destroy man makes him "eternal" with the existence of God. A similar phenomenon affects those who are condemned: the «eternal fire», so far from exterminating them, keeps them in being, in a pattern similar to that experienced by the saints. Finally, there are two further aspects to be noted: the levels of vision (respectively, Life) vary according to merits; there is an indefinite progress as the treasures of God are continue to be communicated indefinitely to the human sarx. |
