Description
Summary:In The Journal of Theological Studies 29 (1978) 457-482, B. Neveu published the rough draft of the mémoire of L. Duchesne on Ordinationes Anglicanae (OA). The present article both provides a study of the mémoire and also furnishes the definitive text of D., a copy of which was found in the Secret Vatican Archives. The importance of this copy rests not only on the fact that it permits one to acquire certain knowledge of the definitive text of D., but also on the fact that it contains in its ample margins—as is normally the practice in the Roman Curia with regard to copies of those studies or documents which are destined to be the subject of discussion in commissions—the critical annotations of an English theologian who was opposed to the validity of OA. The critical notes are not signed, but the arrangement of the document in the Archives and the secrecy which surrounded it, along with other indications, allow one to speculate that the English theologian is one of the three theological experts sent to Rome by Cardinal H. Vaughan to participate in the discussions on OA which were requested by Leo XIII. The text of D. and the notes of the English theologian assist one in comprehending the first phase of the discussions. Preceding the edition of the texts, this article offers an introduction of a theological character which contrasts the rough draft of the document with the definitive text. These introductory remarks also examine and contrast the thought of the two authors and their mode of arguing, particularly with regard to the liturgy. In the edition of the documents which is provided here the critical annotations of the English theologian are reproduced in their entirety, each one in relation to the corresponding place in the text to which it refers. The result is that the reader can follow the exposition of D. and the critical observations of his theological adversary.
