Description
Summary:I. Le pluralisme comme condition nouvelle des sociétés. II. Les notions de « culture » et de « pluralisme culturel ». III. Points critiques du pluralisme culturel: 1. Le passé et l'avenir de la culture occidentale. 2 La culture technicienne doit-elle être agnostique? 3. La jeunesse: une contre-culture? 4. Les tensions culturelles du développement. 5. Le mondialisme: utopie culturelle? IV. Pour une politique de coopération entre universités: 1. Agir comme communauté internationale spécifique. 2. Promouvoir un nouvel humanisme universel. 3. Médiatiser les pluralismes entre catholiques. 4. Instituer la collaboration interculturelle. Modern societies are characterized by new types of solidarity based on pluralism. The phenomenon has become worldwide and it creates a real challenge for Catholic Universities. They have a special responsibility for promoting a new kind of unity in modern society and in the world. In attempting to do so, they must preserve their specific mission in the Church while coping, in a positive and critical way, with the realities of cultural pluralism. The article does not consider, primarily, political, philosophical or theological pluralism; the central problem is the pluralism of cultures understood in a sociological sense. Critical aspects of cultural pluralism are analyzed because of their particular relevance to Catholic Universities: 1 - The crisis of Western culture has underlined the urgency of inculturation. 2 - The agnostic trends in the technocratic culture require that Christians become able to discern the real values as well as the false pretensions of that culture. 3 - Youth as a counterculture: this massive phenomenon calls for a revaluation of past heritage and future ideals. 4 - The cultural tensions of development constitute a primary challenge to all educators. 5 - The emergence of a World culture, adapted to a new world order, requires the close cooperation of all Christians. A policy for cooperation among Catholic Universities is suggested. Four concrete proposals are made, whereby Catholic Universities are invited: 1 - To act as a specific international community among other World communities working for a new international order. 2 - To promote a new type of universal humanism open to local cultures as well as to intercultural aspirations. 3 - To mediate between the pluralisms operating among Catholics and try to promote unity in pluribus. 4 - To institute intercultural collaboration among Catholic Universities, through common projects, common research policies, on a regional and international level.
