Busiri Vici conçut le project d'un déplacement mécanique de l'abside pour ne pas détruire l'ancien mur et ne pas toucher à la précieuse mosaïque médiévale. En outre en faisant des fouilles sous les fondations de la basilique, il crut avoir trouvé les restes d'un antique oratoire des temps apostoliques. Après la mort de Pie IX, Busiri Vici fut déchargé de ses fonctions par le chapitre du Latran. L'architecte V. Vespignani réalisa le prolongement du presbyterium en détruisant le mur et en détachant la mosaïque. Busiri défendit énergiquement ses projets et ses idées, mais ensuite l'historiographie catholique ne l'a plus mentionnée. Andrea Busiri Vici, engineer-architect of the Lateran Chapter and member of the Accademia di S. Luca, was in 1876 given by Pius IX the job of extending the presbytery of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, thereby altering the position of the apse. Busiri Vici projected moving the apse mechanically in order not to destroy the ancient wall or harm the precious medieval mosaic. In digging below the foundations of the Basilica, he believed also to have discovered the remains of an ancient oratory dating from apostolic times. After the death of Pius IX, Busiri Vici was relieved of his post and dismissed by the Lateran Chapter. The architect V. Vespignani afterwards carried out the enlargement of the presbytery, destroying the wall and detaching the mosaic. Busiri defended his projects and his ideas strenuously, but Catholic historiography tells us nothing further of him. |
