The article analyses the intervention of Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro, secretary of Apostolic Nunciature at Madrid (1875-1877), Apostolic Nuntius in Spain (1882-1887) and Cardinal Secretary of the State (1887-1903), in the election of Spanish bishops. In the majority of the cases considered, Rampolla recommended the candidate of the Holy See and attempted to have set aside that of the Gouvernement. |
