Son action à cet égard peut être ramenée aux points de vue suivants: rendre inutile la propagande russe parmi les slaves de la monarchie du Danube, réduire les bases politiques et matérielles du panslavisme russe, consolider la situation de l'Église catholique dans les territoires frontières de l'Est de la monarchie. Cet article décrit la manière dont ces objectifs furent réalisés. En annexe, un pro-memoria de Léon XIII et un pro-memoria composé en résponse par l'empereur François Joseph 1er, ainsi que quelques lettres. From the very start, Pope Leo XIII was convinced of the importance of the Slavic peoples under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy. His actions on their behalf included reducing the impact of Russian propaganda on Slavs in the Donau monarchy, diminishing the political and economic basis of Russian panslavism, and consolidating the situation of the Catholic Church in the territoires at the eastern borders of the monarchy. The article presented here describes the way in which those aims were realised. Included also in an appendix are a memorandum of Leo XIII, a memorandum of the emperor Franz Josef I responding to the aforesaid, and also several other pieces of correspondance. |
