Description
Summary:Between the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries, philosophers of different traditions and schools contributed to an evolution in the relationship between Thomism and Aristotelianism. The lively debates within the Aristotelian world and the alternatives offered by Platonism were important factors in determining these philosophical novelties. In particular, the controversy over the possible advantages granted by pagan philosophers to Christianity imposed to both supporters of Plato and Aristotle the necessity of obtaining the important endorsement of Aquinas as an auctoritas. This article discusses some strategic uses of Thomas Aquinas’s writings in the context of the Renaissance debate on Plato and Aristotle, focusing on the selected examples of Bessarion and Liceti.
