| Summary: | This chapter departs from the Western theology of sovereignty in order to reflect upon the much earlier idea of sovereignty in Vedic literature. In theṚgveda, sovereignty is not an essence of divine status. Rather, it is radically impersonal. Sovereignty, encapsulated in the notion ofṚta (a forerunner of the more familiar concept of dharma), is the order of the Cosmos. Divinity, while emanating fromṚta, is thus exterior to sovereignty. This essay examines the consequences of non-sovereign gods and addresses the function of these Vedic divinities as guardians of sovereigns rather than as sovereigns per se. Il presente studio prende avvio dal contributo della teologia occidentale all’elaborazione del concetto di sovranità, al fine di proporre una riflessione su quest’ultima alla luce della ben più risalente letteratura vedica sull’argomento. NeiṚgveda, la sovranità non è una qualità del divino, ma piuttosto una condizione radicalmente impersonale: racchiusa nella nozione diṚta (un antecedente del più familiare concetto di dharma), essa corrisponde all’ordine del Cosmo. La divinità, nella misura in cui è un’emanazione delloṚta, rimane in questo modo esterna alla sovranità. Scopo del saggio è comprendere quali conseguenze derivino dall’affermare una condizione divina non-sovrana, analizzando la funzione delle divinità vediche in quanto poste a guardia di entità sovrane anziché sovrane esse stesse. |
