In operas of the kind, it can happen that the historical truth is somewhat harmed by the course of the scenic action but it should be emphasized that "Les Huguenots" is in fact the only opera that contributes to the historiography of these sad events. Most of all, the very strong faith of Marcel, the old Huguenot soldier, as well as his repeated use of Luther's choral "Ein feste Burg", make of this character the only herald of French Protestantism in the western opera repertory. Die Hugenotten von Meyerbeer ist eine groβe französische historische Oper, die die Vorbereitung der Massaker der Bartholomäusnacht auf die Bühne bringt. Diese Art von Opern verkürzt manchmal um der Dramaturgie willen die historischen Ereignisse, während die Oper Meyerbeers deshalb besonders wertvoll ist, weil sie die Geschichte genau darstellt.
