The complicity of a certain number of priests enabled protestants living in 18th-century France to escape from the trammels of a now obligatory Catholicism. Marriages, if they took place in church, could be freed from the liturgical trappings as also from sacramental rites. This had the double advantage for each couple of protecting their own convictions and of obtaining a guaranteed legal proof of the union. But who were the priests who were thus willing to lend their aid, what was the programme of this almost lay ceremony, and which components of the little Huguenot community were the main beneficiaries? These are the questions underlying the present study. |
