Summary: | Kandinsky was the first known and recorded European artist to create fully abstract artworks. The religious aspects in his understanding of art have long been highlighted, although these have often remained from the theoretical viewpoint vague and indeterminate. The article shows that many of Kandinsky’s theoretical foundations can be illuminated in the light of the standards of Russian icon painting. The outlook discusses instead the conditions under which contemporary abstract art can be interpreted religiously. |
