Summary: | The doctrine of the fontes moralitatis deals with the three aspects that determine the moral quality of an action : the object (finis operis), the intention (finis operantis) and the circumstances. The relevance of this doctrine is illustrated by means of current examples and the difficulties to delineate and classify the three fontes that arise in tradition but also in contemporary moral theology. Against this background, Peter Knauer's reinterpretation is presented. According to it the moral object is constituted by whether the action corresponds to its reason or not, the intention means the reference of such an already morally constituted action to a further action, and the circumstances merely change the measure of moral quality or guilt. Based on this interpretation, the introductory examples are analysed. |
